The Future of Automotive Laser Heads-Up Display

Heads-up display technology is nothing new, its has been utilized countless times in the automotive industry since the 80′s. That being said, there is certainly major room for improvement. Microvision based out of Redmond, Washington “a world leader in the innovation of a new generation of display technology” sets out to change the industry in a big way.

The Microvision heads-up display system puts to use semiconductor lasers and a microscopic mirror instead of traditional LCD or liquid crystal technology to project critical data onto your windshield. This technology has already been showcased in various concept cars but at this time still remains too costly for large scale commercial applications. However, falling prices for green lasers (a substantial cost component) could fuel wide spread adoption among major automotive manufacturers in the near future. Microvision is currently working with the Pioneer Corporation with plans to launch its first head-up display product this year.
