Thanks to cellphones and an innovative company called Lockitron, getting locked out of your house will soon be a thing of the past, provided that you didn’t forget your phone. Lockitron isn’t quite a lock itself, it’s more like a lock accessory you mount overtop of your current deadbolt (which then physically unlocks the deadbolt). The device connects to the internet via built-in WiFi allowing you to unlock your door with your smartphone.
The Lockitron boys have thought ahead, it will work with any smartphone thanks to their mobile site and even if your rocking an old school Nokia brick you can unlock your door via text message. It gets better, if you happen to own an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, you can enable Lockitron to actually sense when you walk up to the door and it will unlock it for you automatically using Bluetooth. Another really solid feature is the ability to assign your friends access to your home for a fixed period of time.
So by now your probably thinking, how can I get my hands on one of these badboys? Well, currently Lockitron is accepting pre-orders on their website, at the time of writing this they have actually had over 10,000 backers and have managed to raised over 1.5 million dollars in pre-orders. There has been such an overwhelming amount of interest that they have actually sold out of their first batch. Thankfully there is a second round set to ship for May 2013, so get in on it before that round sells out too!
